I think that there are many different reasons why we study history. I probably don't know all of the reasons but I think I know some reasons why. One of the reasons is because it gives us understanding of different cultures and perspective. For example my culture might have thought that they were the first and only people to do something, but if they new more about the people before they might find out that people did that even before that. Another reason is that we need to understand the past so we can understand the present and predict the future. If you investigate the past you might see a pattern for example if there is a war in a country every 50 years then you should notice that and try to prevent the war so you can break the pattern. We need history so we can develope our problem solving skills, our critical thinking and we can discover creativity. What you think isnt a problem today people probably thought it was a problem in the past. You might not even know that problems are problems but you might find out using history.

I like this quote "If you dont like the past, change it" by William L. Burton. I like that qoute because I believe that you can be the change you want to see around you. If you dont like wars or fights then try to stop fights in between people. You might think that that doesnt help but it does. If no one fought then there wouldn't be wars in the world. If you want to end world hunger then you can help one family or maybe even two because if everyone helped someone everyone would have help.

Double-punched by two Indian Ocean storms, the southern African nation of Mozambique on Tuesday struggled with the destruction of a portion of its main national highway, cut-off communications and a reported death toll of 18, according to the nation's National Institute for Natural Disasters.
Tropical Cyclone Funso is lashing the central portion of the country, causing flooding along the Incomati River. Officials fear fuel and food shortages will start hit northern cities in Mozambique that usually get supplies via roadway from the capital, Maputo.
Funso currently has winds of 213 kph (about 132 mph), which would make it equal to a Category 4 major hurricane if located in the Atlantic, said CNN Senior Meteorologist Brandon Miller.

Summary:
On December 8 2011 there was a huge storm in Scotland. The storm was very strong reaching the wind speed of 264 km/h (165 mph). The gusts affected Scotland a lot it left 50,000 people without power. The police in Scotland told the people not to travel because of the strong winds .Because of the winds hundreds of schools had to be shut down and they also shut down bridges and roads. England, Wales, and Northern Ireland were also hit by wind and rain.

My thoughts:
I think that those winds are really dangerous. They are very strong and they are causing a lot of homes to be powerless. I am very glad that they did shut down the schools and roads because it would be even more dangerous. I just hope that these type of things stop happening because a lot of the things are causing death of power outage or damage to the city/s.I repeat that I am very glad to live in a city that is currently safe and that not that many bed things are happening to the city I live in and am from.
Police have told people in Scotland not to travel, as winds of up to 165mph (264km/h) affected the country, leaving more than 50,000 people without power.
As the Met Office issued its highest warning, a red alert, hundreds of schools have shut and bridge and road closures are causing disruption.

.
Summary:
On Saturday December 3 2011 in Southern California Edison terrible wind gusts accrued. The wind gusts were at the speeds of 73 miles per hour on top of a mountain nearby Southern California. At high elevations closer to Metropolis the wind speed was in the range of 35 mph which is about 56 kph to 45 mph(about 72 kph ). I think that the winds were really strong and I wouldn’t like to be in the peoples shoes because those winds gusts were very strong they were near the speed of hurricane winds. I feel really bad for the people who lost their electricity. But I am glad that the damage isn’t as bad as it could have been .I noticed that a lot of terrible natural disasters are happening all around the world. I am very lucky that nothing as bad is happening to me and the place I live in that’s why I’m am very glad to be in a place that is currently safe and I hope it will stay safe.

7 Billion People

Author of article: National Geographic

Date of article written: Dec 27, 2011

Summary

Do you think that 7 billion is a big number? I think it is.It would take you 200 years just to count to 7 billion out loud. Now imagine 7 billion people .The world population is growing  by the minute. Did you know that  every second 5 baby’s are born and 2 people die which means that the world population grows by 3 people every second. But it is not space we need, all of the 7 billion people can fit in Los Angeles shoulder to shoulder. We need clean drinking water because 13% of us don’t have clean water to drink.

My Thoughts

I think it is sad to think that 13% of people in the world don’t have water to drink. I was amazed to find out that the world’s population grows by three people every second. I was also amazed when I found out that it takes you 200 years to count to 7 billion and that you can walk around the world 133 times in 7 billion steps. Before if you said 7 billion I’d  never think about the number that has 9 zeros or the amount of steps you need to take to go around the world 133 .I thought that 7 billion is a lot less than it really is .Now I when you say 7 billion I have a lot more to associate it with.
